Billy Harris

Traditional Knowledge: 

William Harris "Billy Bowlegs) was a personality interest on the reservation for his entire life. In 1881, he was charged with assault and battery on Taylor George. In 1887, he went to Columbia to investigate the ancient Catawba Land Claim. He spoke at the unveiling of the Catawba Confecerate Monument in Fort Mill. He appeared before South Carolina Legislature to appeal for assistance for the tribe. Even after the majority of the Catawba converted to Mormon faith, Billy Bowlegs remained Presbyterian He was also a language informant for Truman Michelson in 1913.
